The Konstruktion, a mathematical operation involving the addition of the numbers that specify a date in the European form (day/month/year), is the basis for Darboven's aesthetic project. Denoted by 'K,' the system was developed as early as 1968 and served to introduce time into Darboven's graph paper drawings. The digits of the year are considered separately while the day and month are treated as units; digits indicating millennium and century are omitted. For example, 1/1/96 = 1 + 1 + 9 + 6 = 17K and 31/12/96 = 31 + 12 + 9 + 6 = 57K.
